Hope is Love

When Ambergris Caye had the first reported case of Covid-19 reported in the country of Belize, the entire island was put on a state of emergency lock down. The island economy dependent on tourists came to a sudden stop. Many on the island residents found themselves without a job or way to feed their families.  Luckily for the community a food bank has already been operating at local NGO Hope Haven Children’s Home and Community Center. They have been disturbing food to over 2,000 families since March 25, 2020. As I watched their many volunteers tirelessly feed the community, I wanted to contribute to their efforts. They inspired me to make my most complicated project to date. A re-imagined logo in a pendant and earring set.  It has been donated to them for a future fund raiser. I also wanted to keep on giving on an ongoing basis. To do this I made my first collection “Hope Is Love”. 50% of sales from this collection will be donated to their feeding program.

“You are never fully dressed until you put on earrings.”

Advice from my Great Grandmother Ruby.  She favored wearing pearls studs even while baking a cherry pie. Some traits do run in families. I love pearls and never forget to put my earrings on.

Another family tradition has been attending the Tucson Gem Show since 1990.  I had the greatest fun choosing the perfect jewelry pieces as gifts for my friends. After becoming frustrated at the lack of quality in mass market items I began to seek things handmade . From the beginning I had also  a strong creative desire to work with the beautiful pearls and gems I was seeing every year in Tucson. So after purchasing some basic tools and gemstones, I went to work to see where this passion would lead me. FantaSea Gems was born in 2016.

FantaSea Gems creations are all handcrafted in small batches on the beautiful shores of Ambergris Caye, Belize.  The flora and fauna,  vivid colors of  tropics and Caribbean Sea influence my choice in semi-precious gems and designs. Not wanting to contribute excess all are made in a limited quantity. I then work to reproduce each piece on a nearly made-to-order basis.
